5th King Of JerkishBehavior: Tiger Woods

Golf? Yeah its pretty boring to watch and I never took much interest in the sport until one individual by the name of Tiger Woods came along. Now, I am most definitely watching rounds of golf whenever Tiger is playing in a tournament on TV especially if he is in contention to win on Sunday. While was watching Tiger play you can just become captivated by his greatness and spectacular dominance. I remember watching the 2005 Master’s (the most prestigious golf tournament in the world) and Tiger was on the 16th hole. He had about a 40 foot putt at the edge of the green and what happened next was the greatest shot I had ever seen. He hit the ball and made it go in a “L’ direction and as it got to the hole, the ball slowed down and just stopped at the edge of the hole while displaying the Nike logo (Cha-ching) and then just dropped in. I have never been so hyped over a golf shot in my life. There’s also the 2008 PGA Championship, where he had a force a sudden death playoff after coming from behind to start the day and he ended up with the victory. Sounds typical right? No, he played and won the entire tournament with a torn acl, WHAT?! WOW!!!

Needless to say, Tiger Woods is the best golfer in the world and one of the greatest of all time. Why? He brought a whole legion of new fans to the sport of golf like myself. Tiger is 2nd all time in career majors won with 14 in 13 years (Jack Nicklaus considered the greatest golfer of all-time for now has the record with 18 majors won in 24 years). In 1999-2000, Tiger won all 4 majors in a row and is the only player in the modern era to hold all 4 major championships at the same time. Tiger has changed the mechanics of his swing at least 3 different times and he continues to be the same dominant force. Whenever Tiger is in a tournament, he is the favorite to win no matter what and even if he has an insurmountable deficit to overcome whoever is atop the leader board on Sunday is still worried about Tiger Woods. If you thought he was a problem on the golf course, well he is an even bigger one off it. Nike started a whole golf division because of Tiger which made $725 million last year and oh yeah Tiger receives a percentage of the profits. Tiger Woods also has his own golf course design business with future locales in North Carolina, Mexico, and Dubai. So last but not least, Tiger Woods is the 5th King of JerkishBehavior.

4th King Of JerkishBehavior: Phil Ivey

Growing up, the game of poker always had a certain cache about it as if it was the greatest and most skilled game in the world. So I have always been enamored with learning how to play poker. Summer 2003, there was this celebrity poker show on TV and I watched it religiously which lead to me finally figured out the basic concepts of No-limit Texas Hold-em. After watching the show, I felt like I was ready to play some real poker for money. So fall hits and I am back at college, my boy tells me about this poker game where guys were making a $100 a night (This is like millions to a college lad), For real!? Sign me up. After that night, I fell in love with poker and became a part-time poker player while in college which eventually led to me becoming a professional for a short period of time. So with all sports you need an idol but who’s the best in the game that people look up to and try pattern your game after in poker? However, there are millions of poker players and hundreds of well known of professionals, there can’t be a consensus best player in the world with that many people involved in the sport, right? Wrong! The player most often sited as the best is Phil Ivey also known as the Tiger Woods of poker.

Phil Ivey is considered the best in the world because he has no fear while playing at the highest playing limits possible, he is unemotional at the poker table so you can’t get any kind of read off of him, and he has a very aggressive playing style so you don’t know if he is bluffing or has the nuts (The best hand possible on any given hand that can’t be beat). Like all champions, Phil Ivey is at his best when he is chip leader and usually that means he is leaving with a tournament win. There’s a ton of variations for the game of poker and Phil is a feared adversary in all of them. Phil Ivey being great in all the different games of poker and in their different elements (tournament, live cash games, and online) is why he is the consensus best poker player in the world. Phil Ivey is the youngest and quickest to win has 7 World Series of Poker bracelets (the all-time record is 11). The title of best poker player in the world is a pretty cool moniker and Phil is the true essence of cool. So much so that I have seen and been around NBA Hall of Famers & All-Stars, NFL players, rappers, R&B legends, and models before and wasn’t fazed by them. However, when I went Ivey’s charity poker tournament in Las Vegas in 2008, Phil Ivey was the only dude that has ever had me like star-struck and in awe when I was in his presence. For this reason alone and along with his poker greatness, Phil Ivey is the 4th King of JerkishBehavior.

1. During the 2005 Aussie Millions Tournament, Phil Ivey was heads-up with Paul Jackson and the sickest greatest hand of poker skill I ever witnessed happened. Phil Ivey has Q8 vs Paul Jackson’s 65. Blinds are 28k-14k, Phil raises it 60k more and Paul calls. Flop is JJ7, Phil leads out and bets 80k which led to Jackson raising to 170k (the hand should be over) but Phil reraises to 320k (that should be case closed) which miraculously leads to Paul Jackson raising to 470k (remember he has 6high while Ivey has Queen high). Phil somehow someway had the audacity to push it all in with a 5-bet bluff and ends up winning the pot. I bow my head to the greatness because Who does that? JerkishBehavior at its finest!!! 2. At this year’s WSOP, several poker pros bet Phil Ivey $3-10million that he wouldn’t win a bracelet this year. Don’t ever wake a sleeping great because Phil has won 2 bracelets this year along with making and finishing 7th at the final table of the World Series of Poker Main Event. Jerk!!!

3. In 2007-8, Phil Ivey has won over $9 million playing online poker at Full Ttilt (not including tourney wins and cash game wins) and has an estimated net worth between $40-100 million…Bananas!!!

4. In 2005, Phil Ivey won the Aussie Millions tournament and took home the $1 million first prize and then the very next day won the Full Tilt Invitational against the 6 of the best poker players players in the world and he took home an additional 600k. Phil made 1.6 million for 2 days of work , what a JERK!!!

5. Phil Ivey drives a Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren (A benz that comes with lambo doors but looks like the bat mobile) that costs a cool half a million and they only make 500 a year.

3rd King Of JerkishBehavior: Denzel Washington

I am not going to lie, I hated him growing up because all the females loved Denzel Washington. I thought he was too clean cut and always played good guy roles in his films. My feelings towards Denzel soon drastically changed with the release of the best hooping movie ever in “He Got Game”. Denzel played a quasi bad guy part in a convicted wife murderer and tries to win the love of his son (whose is the #1 hooper in the nation). Throughout the movie, I found myself actually rooting for Denzel for some reason. So now I a little love for Denzel after this performance and then the classic “Training Day” happened (I still turn off the part when he is about to get assassinated by the Russians) and ever since I have been the biggest Denzel Washington fan there is.

It doesn’t matter what role Denzel plays whether it’s a bad guy (Training Day) or good guy (John Q), you will always find yourself rooting for him. That’s a sign of an one of a kind great actor. Denzel also ran off a string of classic films year after year that made fans had to take notice of his greatness starting with “Training Day”, “John Q” (powerful film & a tearjerker), “Antwone Fisher”, “Out Of Time”, “Man on Fire” (truly his most gangster role in that he made a dude commit suicide WHOA!!), “Inside Man”, Déjà vu, and “American Gangster”. The other great thing about a Denzel movie is that he will always have at least one classic line that you will take with you from the rest of your life. Remember “King Kong ain't got sh*t on me” from Training Day or “You can’t bullshit a bullshitter” from Inside Man and there’s so many more quotables. No matter what in a Denzel film, he always demonstrates his “I’m the shit fool” swagger/intelligence and you will always get a
couple of funny/witty lines as well. And last but not least, Denzel always has a bad female as his leading lady ( Eva Mendes, Sanaa Lathan, Paula Patton and the list goes on & on) and for these reasons Denzel Washington is not only the best actor there is but also the 3rd King of JerkishBehavior.

2nd King Of JerkishBehavior: Jay-Z


The 1st time I heard Jay-Z rap it was Ain't No f/ Foxy Brown but I wasn't quite sold on his greatness because I only listened to the singles at the time. When I revisited Jay's music for a 2nd time, I was ready especially when I saw the "Hard Knock Life" video with the quarter water & Bentley in the hood. I was hella hype the next day at school and ending up borrowing Jigga's "Volume 2" album from one of my boys in high school and dubbed (the old school tape-deck way) it. After listening to that whole cd, I knew I had found my favorite rapper and I went on to cop his whole back catalog (I somehow got "Reasonable Doubt" in an uneven trade for Timbaland "Tim's Bio" cd). Jay-Z is the short list of musician/artists' out there whose cd I will buy the 1st day it comes out no matter what because I know I won't be disappointed with the music. Jay's stories about hustling was so vivid and real that you couldn't help but get reeled in. He talked about the good, bad, and ugly side of the game and gave you a whole inside look into the psyche of a hustler. Jay always has the sickest metaphors in the game and he also has the secret gems that you won't catch right off the back but after a couple listens or years down the line you pick up on them like damn how did I miss that line. The truth and reality in the Jay's music is what makes him stand apart from everyone else in that you can relate to whatever he is rapping about. Jay Z is the greatest rapper alive because he isn't compared to other rappers in the game and he is only compared to his previous works so whenever you're competing against yourself and not your peers that is the true meaning of greatness.

Jay always talked about that fly ish that was exclusive that was ahead of the present time/trend where once people finally was able to obtain it, he was done with it and onto some next level fly ish which is the personification of cool. So if you didn't know what to wear or what was hot in the streets you could just put on a Jigga song and find out. Jay is the epitomy of a tastemaker where he can make or break any trend at his whim and make the world follow suit (Mitchell & Ness or Cristal anyone?). The fact that he took exceptional rapping ability at the age 27 (you're never too old to GET MONEY) and created nothing into an almost billion dollar empire in many different arenas because of his entrepreneurial spirit which makes Jay-Z, the 2nd king of JerkishBehavior.

1. Jay-Z was the first rap artist to perform and headline at Glastonbury Festival in London (a major music
festival) and lead singer Noel Gallagher from the band Oasis questioned the merit of Jay headlining this event. What does Jay do? He comes out singing Oasis's most popular song "Wonderwall" while playing the guitar then afterwards he went his hit song "I got 99 problems but a b**ch ain't one" , Jerkishbehavior at its finest.
Sidebar: Jay made Wonderwall appear on Billboard's Top 100 charts after his performance and the song was 10 years old, WOW.

2.Jay-Z stopped the whole throwback jersey trend then told cats to throw on a button-up and grow up. Every time David Stern (The commissioner of the NBA) sees him he says "You know this fuckin guy right here? He ruined my fuckin jersey business." Who does that?

3. Jay-Z is married to one of the most beautiful, baddest, and talented women in the world in Beyonce and until this he has yet to publicly claim her as his chick, JERK!!!

4. Jigga once rhymed "I'm raping Def Jam til I'm the 100 million man" on his 2001 classic album "Blueprint". Seven years later, he went from being the President of Def Jam Records to signing a deal for his own record label "Roc Nation" for $150 million!!! Greatness speaks things into existence.



5. Jay-Z has the record for most albums to ever debut at #1 on the Billboard 200 with 11 #1 albums which moved the legendary Elvis to 2nd place and what makes this feat even more incredible and crazy is that Jay never had #1 single as a solo artist on the charts (Update: Empire State Of Mind is his first #1 single).

The 1st King of JerkishBehavior: Michael Jordan

Where do I begin with the greatest basketball player ever? Ever since the I first time I watched him play back in '91, I wanted to be just like Mike. From being 6'6, long shorts, black/red calf sleeve, playing in the NBA, and mimicked his every move on the court. I never grew to be 6'6 or play in the NBA but being just like Mike in still ingrained in my DNA from trying to be the best every time step out the house, never giving up even if at first you don't succeed, and always being the best dressed while wearing the freshest kicks possible. I adopted all of these traits because MJ changed the game of basketball on and off the court. He had two different eras of dominance, one where he was the best athlete on the floor who dunked on everybody and did air defying reverse layups. While the 2nd era was where he had the most unstoppable shot in the game with the fade away jumper and was the most clutch player ever. And if anybody dared said that someone was in his class of greatness, he made it his number one goal to disprove that notion and show he is in a league all by himself. He changed the game off the court by taking a small niche company in Nike and turned it into the #1 shoe company in the world which became a multi-billion dollar corporation. "Air Jordan's" are the still most sought after and recognizable shoes out today and Mike retired from basketball in 2004. So when you think of Michael Jordan, you automatically think of being the best and that's why Michael Jordan is a 1st King of JerkishBehavior.

1. Michael Jordan retired from basketball (1st time) while being the best player in the world in his prime after winning 3 championships in a row for my hometown Chicago Bulls to go play professional baseball (a sport he hadn't played since he was a kid) because he was bored with being the best ever. Who does that? >>

2. Michael Jordan single-handedly stopped multiple Hall of Famers from (Charles Barkley, Karl Malone, John Stockton, Patrick Ewing, Reggie Miller) winning a championship and had no problem reminding them of this fact whenever they played. He led the only non-dominant center dynasty in NBA history (think about it).>>

3. In 1993, a rookie for the Washington Bullets named LaBradford Smith had the game of his life and scored 37 pts on Mike. Mike was so upset and embarrassed that some no-name kid gave him buckets that he told his teammates that he was going to get all 37 points that Labradford scored on him in the 1st half next time they played (which coincidentally was the next night). Next night at the end of the 1st half, Michael Jordan drops 36 on LaBradford Smith WOW can you say G.O.A.T. >>

4. One time while playing for the Washington Wizards after practice, Michael Jordan was shooting buckets for cash Richard Hamilton and was losing. Doug Collins (the coach at the time) said the bus is about to leave, lets go. Mike's response was "They'll wait" so he kept shooting for dollars until he was winning and of course, the bus was still there waiting. What a Jerk!!!>>

5. The story of Michael Jordan getting cut from his high school's varsity team as a sophomore always amazing me. Why? Because no one trips in that the varsity team is only meant for junior's and senior's while he tried to make as a sophomore so him getting cut shouldn't have been that big of a deal but not for Michael Jordan. He wanted to play at the highest level or nothing else even at an early age. Now thats some JerkishBehavior!!!
