JerkishBehavior Music Review: R.Kelly Untitled
Untitled sees the return of the Pied piper, The King of R&B, or just Kels for short from his 4-year hiatus ( Double-Up doesn’t count because that was a rap cd). So does R. Kelly still have the magic to make another R&B classic and give the game what it has been missing while schooling all the new cats in the game? The answer is let me get back to on that one. Untitled starts off with “Crazy Night” which is in auto-tune so that’s kind of off putting and puts me in a WTF Kels early. The song isn’t bad and it would actually be tight if Kels actually sang the song not just hook and used auto-tune for the hook instead. Luckily, Kels is back to being Kels on the next several tracks with his classic freaky sex tales that we love R. Kelly for and will sure to have on repeat from “Echo”, “Go Low”, and “Whole Lotta Kisses”. One of my favorite tracks on the album is “Like I Do’ where Kels sings how he isn’t good at a lot of stuff but he knows for a fact there two things in the world that he is the best at.
The middle of the album sees R.Kelly experiment with new sounds and songs you wouldn’t expect to hear from him. These songs sound like something that Trey Songz, Chris Brown, or Jeremih would do. “Be My #2”, “I Love the DJ”, and “Supaman High” aren’t bad but they take some time to get used to coming from Kels because he is Mr. Originality. The last part of the album, R. Kelly is giving us all those slow songs and showing off his range that we love so much. “Text Me” will be an instant hit and a lot people getting their Kels on. “Religious” and “Pregnant” are classics that have Kels showing his love for two special kinds of women. On Religious, one makes him wants to changes his way and go to church. While on “Pregnant”, the woman of his affection is so drop dead gorgeous that he wants to get her pregnant with Tyrese, Robin Thicke, and The Dream joining the party to fully get his point across. Overall, Untitled is a grower especially if you expect typical classic R. Kelly throughout where you have to get adjusted to the experimentation by Kels. Kels is still bringing hits and classic to the table and you will eventually fall in love with album. Untitled is easily one of the better R&B releases of the year.
Overall: 4 out of 5 stars
